CASE STUDY

Renowned wine advisor app for supermarket purchases

Client :

WineMeister

Client & Project Background Information

The Winemeister app was created to help consumers in German supermarkets make informed decisions when buying a wine. Shoppers are often overwhelmed by the wide variety of wines available and struggle to choose one that matches their taste, complements a specific meal, or suits a special occasion. To address this problem, Winemeister collaborated with one of Europe's most renowned sommeliers, who tasted and categorized all wines available in large German supermarkets. The app presents this information in a playful and intuitive manner, making it easy for users to find the perfect wine.

From the start, VT Netzwelt proved to be a partner we could fully rely on. Given our upcoming appearance on national TV, we were under a tight deadline to deliver a very strong and scalable mobile app. VT combined a clear understanding of our vision with the technical expertise to bring it to life. The result was an app that awed users and helped us advance as the leading wine-advisor in supermarkets across Germany. Their team played a truly pivotal role in moving our business forward.

The Challenge

One standout aspect of our development process was our ability to handle a sudden surge in user numbers. After being featured multiple times on prime-time German television, the app experienced hundreds of thousands of concurrent users. This required immediate server scaling and app performance optimization to ensure seamless functionality – a significant achievement, especially in a pre-cloud technology era. Additionally, we developed an advanced and high-performance wine label matching algorithm, allowing users to scan wine labels and instantly retrieve detailed information about the wine. This innovative feature became a core differentiator of the app, enhancing user engagement and making the wine discovery process more intuitive.

Our Contribution

VT Netzwelt was involved in the entire cycle of the Winemeister app development:

  • Problem Analysis: We assessed the challenges consumers face when buying wine, including the difficulty of identifying and choosing quality wines, and defined the requirements for a solution.
  • Solution Design: We conceptualized a mobile application for Android and iOS that would meet user needs effectively, including seamless wine label recognition and gamified elements.
  • UI/UX Design: Starting with initial pencil sketches, we developed the user interface and experience, creating an intuitive and visually appealing design that resonated with users.
  • Development and Implementation: We executed the technical development of the app, integrating the wine database, implementing gamified elements, and creating the custom wine label matching algorithm for instant recognition and data retrieval.
  • Launch and Maintenance: We ensured a successful market launch and provided ongoing maintenance and updates, continually optimizing the app's performance to keep it running smoothly and relevant

Achievements

The Winemeister app achieved several notable successes:

  • High User Engagement: The app attracted tens of thousands of concurrent users and continued to grow its user base.
  • Media Recognition: It was featured multiple times on prime-time German television, significantly increasing its visibility and reach.
  • Awards and Accolades: The app won more than ten awards, including being named "App of the Month" by Deutsche Telekom.
  • Exceptional User Feedback: Users praised the app for its user-friendliness and utility, reinforcing its value in the market.
